Public Pensions & Infrastructure Finance Hearing |
Description of Oversight Hearing
The Little Hoover Commission is conducting a follow-up hearing that will serve as an update on two recent studies, public pension reform and infrastructure finance, as part of its ongoing commitment to oversight.
In an infrastructure finance study released January 2010, the Commission found that the state lacked a comprehensive, sustainable strategy for funding and delivery of transportation infrastructure projects. The Commission recommended the state broaden its portfolio of financing and delivery options, adopt a strategy and processes that better link key related goals in state policy, and improve its use of state planning and policy organizations toward these goals.
A Commission study released in February 2011 found that rising costs of promised pension benefits are eating into state and local budgets. Underfunding of pension plans, together with lower than projected investment returns have left many funds with significant unfunded liabilities.
